Dawn's City Council Record
As a Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer is leading the fight to reduce the tax burden and improve the quality of life for all Hoboken residents. Here are just a few of her accomplishments and initiatives:
Worked together with Council colleagues to expose the Administration’s illegal $10 million overspending of its own 2008 proposed budget.
Introduced an
ordinance that would have enabled the City Council to lead by example in reducing the City’s healthcare costs by accepting premium co-pays.
Called on the Administration to negotiate strongly with labor unions to reduce the City’s exorbitant personnel
costs (which represent 80 percent of the operating budget) by ten percent.
Sponsored and passed a resolution to require full disclosure of the costs of a PILOT to the city before any PILOTs can be approved.
Released certified audit to the public to bring more of the city’s financial situation out in the open.
Released NJ Transit Plan so residents could see the out of scale redevelopment that NJ Transit was planning.
Called for Furloughs to reduce personnel costs while avoiding lay-offs.
Worked to shift services and expenses to the County as much as possible to reduce costs to the Hoboken taxpayer while maintaining service levels. For example, worked to ensure that senior transportation services continue through the County at no cost to the taxpayer.
Advocated strongly to persuade North Hudson Sewage to move up the construction of the pump most important to reducing our flooding problem from last to first. After strong resistance, North Hudson Sewage ultimately decided to
change the order.
Introduced a more cost-effective integrated solution to Hoboken’s flooding problem through the use of state-of-the-art wireless technology. Dawn is continuing the uphill fight to get the City and the North Hudson Sewerage Authority to employ
technology, which could help solve the flooding problem while
saving millions of dollars.
Sponsored and won adoption of an
ordinance that created the Open Space Trust Fund.
Successfully led effort to secure funding from the Board of Public Utilities for a municipal
energy audit to reduce the City’s energy costs and usage.
Sponsored and won adoption of an
ordinance creating striped bike lines in Hoboken to improve safety for people who drive, bike, and walk by reducing the speed of traffic.
Initiated effort with Jersey City and Hudson County planners to explore ways to improve connectivity between Hoboken and Jersey City. This included looking at the possibility of rerouting Paterson Plank road to reduce traffic and support the development of a large neighborhood park. A joint application with Jersey City for funding a connectivity study is currently pending before the North Jersey Transit Planning Authority.
Took action on public safety by working with NJ Transit to improve
signage and the pedestrian crossing at the dangerous light rail crossing over Paterson Plank Road, at no additional cost to the City.
In response to community concerns, worked with residents and the Police to organize a public safety meeting. As a result, the Hoboken Police, NJ Transit Police, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s office have coordinated efforts to address rising public safety issues.
Worked with the Administration and PSEG to review current street lighting and implement a pilot program to light areas impacted by crime, increasing safety at no cost to the taxpayer.
Worked with Stevens Institute of Technology students to conduct Hoboken’s first Road Safety Audit of the Southwestern neighborhood. The process involved leaders from the NJ DOT, Hudson County Planning Division, and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority conducting an on-site evaluation of the Southwestern neighborhood to brainstorm short and long term solutions to
traffic safety issues.
